Appointing a human king does not replace God's supreme authority over the nation. Instead, it establishes a leadership structure where the human monarchy remains entirely subordinate to the kingdom of heaven. The success of this new system depends on absolute loyalty. The people and their king must actively fulfill positive commandments and strictly avoid negative ones, ensuring they do not mutiny or rebel against God [מלבי״ם, מצודת ציון].

If the nation and their leader meet this condition, they are promised a twofold reward. First, their survival is guaranteed; both the people and the king will endure and enjoy long lives [רש״י, צאינה וראינה]. Second, God will continue to actively lead them. He will remain at the head of the camp, fight their battles, and provide His divine protection. In this ideal arrangement, the human king does not act as the ultimate ruler. Rather, he serves as a general or a mediator taking orders directly from God, while both he and the nation simply follow His lead [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This structure also resolves a deeper question regarding King Saul's right to the throne, given that the eternal monarchy was ultimately destined for the House of David. If Saul had not sinned, his reign could have continued through a division of realms. The House of David represents God's throne in the upper, spiritual realms, while Saul was intended to rule in the lower, earthly realm at a lesser level. Therefore, the condition that the king must follow God serves as a reminder that Saul's dynasty was always meant to remain secondary and subordinate to the House of David, which directly reflects God's ultimate kingship [אהבת יהונתן].
