The people mistakenly believed that halting all trade and profit-making on the Sabbath would weaken the city and cause its residents to flee. The prophet directly confronts this fear, revealing that the exact opposite is true. Rather than causing economic ruin, strict observance of the Sabbath is the ultimate guarantee of the city's prosperity [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

When the people commit to this observance, they receive a promise built on governmental stability and national security [מלבי״ם]. First, the continuation of the royal dynasty is assured. The kings themselves will securely occupy the royal throne, while their princes will travel alongside them in horse-drawn chariots [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, the promise guarantees true independent sovereignty. The ruling kings and princes will emerge directly from within the nation, ensuring that foreign powers will never take control of the city [מלבי״ם]. These local leaders will successfully guide the rest of the people [מצודת דוד]. Finally, the physical and social survival of Jerusalem is assured. The city will be protected from destruction [מלבי״ם] and will remain a permanent, bustling center filled with life for all time [מצודת דוד].
