ירמיהו, פרק י״ז, פסוק י״ח

A prophet enduring relentless persecution turns to God in prayer, asking that the shame and destruction intended for him be redirected toward his tormentors [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He pleads for their downfall, specifically targeting the people of Anathoth who have been pursuing him [רש״י]. He asks that they experience deep humiliation, a disgrace that will ultimately come to pass when they are dragged away into exile [מצודת דוד].

This plea for their ruin is a direct response to the enemies' own mocking demands. Because they cynically taunted him about the coming day of disaster, he asks God to bring upon them the very catastrophe they scoffed at and asked to see [רד״ק]. He prays that his adversaries be shattered at the hands of an oppressor [מצודת דוד], while he himself is spared from such a fate [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The prophet asks for a doubled measure of destruction [מצודת ציון], a severe punishment where one crushing blow immediately follows another [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This request is not limited to exactly two instances of ruin. Instead, it is a plea for a continuous, unbroken chain of disasters, striking his enemies many times over in a sustained sequence [רד״ק, מנחת שי].
