In their attempt to outsmart Joshua and secure a peace treaty, the Gibeonites carefully select which of God's great miracles to mention. They need to establish their credibility as foreigners arriving from a very distant land. To achieve this, they deliberately list older historical events, specifically the miracles that took place in Egypt and the defeat of the two Amorite kings, Sihon and Og.

At the same time, the Gibeonites purposely avoid mentioning the recent miracle of the splitting of the Jordan River. This calculated omission is designed to convince Joshua of their distant origins. By leaving out this recent event, they create the illusion that their homeland is so far away that the latest news of the Jordan crossing has simply not yet had time to reach them [רד״ק].
