The representatives of the Gibeonites express absolute surrender, placing their fate and future entirely at the mercy of the victor. They completely abandon any attempt at fighting or resistance, recognizing that their lives now depend solely on Joshua's decisions. In this vulnerable state, they have nothing left to rely on except the treaty that was previously made with them and Joshua's own capacity for mercy [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Submitting completely to his authority, they declare themselves ready and prepared to accept any decree handed down to them. They leave their future entirely open, willing to accept and follow whatever actions Joshua deems right and proper [מלבי״ם].
