Judges 14:7Sefaria

וַיֵּ֖רֶד וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר לָֽאִשָּׁ֑ה וַתִּישַׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֥י שִׁמְשֽׁוֹן׃

The journey toward marriage often shifts from a sudden spark of attraction to the practical steps of building a connection. An initial bond sparked merely by physical appearance must eventually give way to meaningful conversation and personal discovery. This crucial transition tests true internal compatibility rather than just surface-level appeal.

When the time came to communicate, different perspectives emerge on how the dialogue unfolded. One approach suggests that Samson spoke directly to the Philistine woman. His intention was to propose marriage [ביאור שטיינזלץ] and to carefully evaluate her character [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם, אברבנאל]. Conversely, another understanding indicates that the communication was not with the woman herself, but rather about her. In this view, Samson approached her parents and relatives to arrange the practical details of the wedding [רש"י, רד"ק]. A third perspective offers a different dynamic entirely, proposing that it was actually Samson's father who went down to speak on his behalf, even though the father did not approve of the match and the woman only found favor in Samson's eyes [אברבנאל].

Following these interactions, a deep sense of agreement and approval is firmly established [מצודת ציון]. Although Samson's attraction was already known, this renewed approval carries a deeper meaning. The initial attraction was strictly visual and external. Now, after engaging in conversation and examining her wisdom, her character traits, and her attitude toward him, Samson realized that her mind and her words were just as fitting for him as her physical beauty [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם, אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
