וְאִם־לֹ֨א תִמְצָ֣א יָדָהּ֮ דֵּ֣י שֶׂה֒ וְלָקְחָ֣ה שְׁתֵּֽי־תֹרִ֗ים א֤וֹ שְׁנֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יוֹנָ֔ה אֶחָ֥ד לְעֹלָ֖ה וְאֶחָ֣ד לְחַטָּ֑את וְכִפֶּ֥ר עָלֶ֛יהָ הַכֹּהֵ֖ן וְטָהֵֽרָה׃ {פ}

The transition into motherhood brings both profound spiritual elevation and intense physical vulnerability, which is sometimes accompanied by financial strain. God provides a compassionate solution for a new mother who lacks the financial means to afford the standard offering of a sheep [אבן עזרא]. She is not left without a path to spiritual restoration. Instead, God provides a more accessible alternative, ensuring that even with a modest offering, she can stand before Him with dignity. Despite her physical and economic challenges, she is empowered to fulfill her spiritual destiny as a mother [רש״ר הירש].

To achieve this, she brings exactly two birds, a specific quantity distinct from other purification rituals [מלבי״ם]. These two birds must belong to the exact same species, either two turtledoves or two pigeons, rather than a mixture of both [הדר זקנים]. The designation of which bird will serve as the burnt offering and which as the sin offering is finalized either by the owner at the time of purchase or by the priest at the time of the sacrifice [תורה תמימה].

A fascinating detail emerges regarding the order of these offerings. The burnt offering is mentioned first, followed by the sin offering, which seems to contradict the established law that a sin offering is always sacrificed first on the altar. The primary approach among commentators is that this order applies only to how the offerings are listed and read. This theoretical priority is given because a burnt offering is entirely consumed and dedicated to God. Furthermore, for the impoverished mother, these birds replace the sheep she would have brought as a burnt offering, making it the central focus of her ritual [רש״י, מלבי״ם, גור אריה]. Others suggest this order applies to times when the Temple does not stand. Since reading the laws of the offerings is considered equivalent to performing them, the burnt offering is read first because its complete dedication to God most closely mirrors the pure essence of a sacrifice [תורה תמימה, פרדס יוסף]. Alternatively, the order teaches a practical law: if the priest accidentally offered the burnt offering before the sin offering, the ritual remains valid [הדר זקנים].

Beyond the practical laws, the sequence carries a profound message about human nature and divine mercy. A burnt offering atones for thoughts of the heart, while a sin offering atones for physical actions and spoken words. In the intense pain of labor, a mother might harbor harsh thoughts or even swear against returning to her husband. Strictly speaking, a sin of thought damages the spiritual connection to God and is fundamentally more severe, which is why it is mentioned first. Yet, because God is deeply merciful and does not rush to punish fleeting thoughts, the actual physical sacrifice begins with the sin offering, addressing only her spoken words and actions [חומת אנך, כלי יקר].

The process concludes with the priest facilitating her atonement, showing that her purification is entirely dependent on his service [אבן עזרא]. However, the concept of atonement in this context does not necessarily imply a moral failure. Some explain that there is no actual sin involved; rather, the process is a physical and spiritual cleansing, much like purifying a home [דעת זקנים]. Complementing this idea, others note that during childbirth and the subsequent days, a mother's attention is naturally consumed by sheer physical survival and bodily processes. The offering and the priest's intervention provide a necessary pivot, allowing her to shift her focus away from the purely physical realm and back toward holiness. Through this, she is purified and once again ready to enter the Sanctuary and partake in the sacred [ספורנו].
