Leviticus 15:11Sefaria

The laws of ritual impurity address the complex ways in which a man suffering from an abnormal bodily discharge transmits his impure state to others, as well as the rigorous process required for his own purification. While physical contact is a known method of transferring impurity, a unique mechanism exists regarding this specific condition. The primary approach among commentators is that impurity can be transferred through movement alone, even without direct physical contact. If the afflicted man causes a pure individual to move or shift—such as by tipping a scale they are both sitting on—the pure person becomes impure Other perspectives focus on direct physical contact, either emphasizing that the afflicted man touches the pure individual with his actual hands [ביאור יש״ר], or that he soils the pure person's clothing with hands tainted by the discharge [הופמן, העמק דבר]. An alternative view proposes a distinction based on the afflicted man's hygiene: if he touches a pure person with washed hands, only the person's body contracts impurity, but if his hands are unwashed, the pure person's clothing becomes impure as well [אבן עזרא].

When addressing the afflicted man's own purification, the detail regarding unwashed hands does not imply that washing the hands alone is sufficient to restore purity. The primary approach among commentators is that complete purification requires the immersion of the entire body in a ritual bath. Until he fully immerses, even if the discharge has completely ceased and he has counted seven clean days, he retains his full level of impurity and continues to contaminate others. Highlighting the hands in this process serves several profound purposes. Primarily, it establishes a fundamental principle for all ritual immersion: just as hands are external and exposed, only the visible, external parts of the body must come into direct contact with the water. Hidden areas, such as the inside of the mouth or deep skin folds, do not require water to enter them, provided they are free of any dirt that would theoretically block the water

Additionally, because hands are constantly active and prone to becoming soiled by the discharge, focusing on them emphasizes the strict obligation to scrub away any adhering dirt before immersing. Sages also find within this detail a conceptual foundation for the general practice of handwashing Philosophically, hands represent a person's capacity for action; when the body is mired in impurity, one's power to act is similarly compromised and requires spiritual renewal [רש״ר הירש]. Linguistically, the entire human form is sometimes referred to by the hand, the primary organ of extension and activity [הכתב והקבלה]. A unique interpretation suggests that the reference to hands acts as a euphemism for the male reproductive organ, mandating that the specific site of the discharge be thoroughly scrubbed of all residue before immersion, lest the purification be rendered completely invalid [רשב״ם].

The purification process demands vigorous rinsing and meticulous scrubbing of the body, rather than a simple wash, to ensure the removal of any physical barrier between the skin and the purifying waters The impurity associated with this condition is treated as a uniquely severe illness. Consequently, upon his recovery, the man is obligated to bring a sacrifice as an expression of gratitude for his healing. Furthermore, his purification requires immersion specifically in the living waters of a natural, flowing spring, rather than a standard ritual bath
