מיכה, פרק ו׳, פסוק י״ב

Micah 6:12Sefaria

Moral and spiritual corruption has a way of infecting every layer of society, ultimately destroying both human relationships and faith in God. In a prophetic vision directed at either Samaria or Jerusalem, a sharp contrast is drawn between the kindness God expects from humanity and the harsh reality on the ground. Typically, theft is driven by hunger and desperate survival. Yet in this society, the city's wealthiest residents—those who lack absolutely nothing—are the ones consumed by violence and robbery [אברבנאל]. This corruption takes several forms. It appears as homes overflowing with stolen property [רד״ק], as acts of extortion and injustice that slip past the boundaries of standard law [ביאור שטיינזלץ], and as calculated business fraud carried out through rigged weights and measures [מלבי״ם].

The rest of the city's inhabitants are not innocent bystanders. Lacking the power and resources to hoard massive amounts of wealth like the rich, they settle for smaller gains achieved by telling lies [רד״ק]. A clear distinction exists in how these falsehoods operate. The first type is a basic, obvious lie. The second type is far more sophisticated, involving a deeply deceitful manner of speaking. This represents calculated, intelligent speech used with such cunning that the deception becomes completely invisible [מלבי״ם]. The tongue itself transforms into a dedicated tool of fraud resting right inside their mouths [מצודת דוד].

Beyond the immediate social damage and financial theft, this culture of deception carries severe spiritual consequences. It represents the exact opposite of walking humbly with God. The lies they tell are ultimately directed at God Himself, as they actively spread the false belief that God does not exist or that He has completely abandoned the world [אברבנאל].
