בַּמָּה֙ אֲקַדֵּ֣ם יְהֹוָ֔ה אִכַּ֖ף לֵאלֹהֵ֣י מָר֑וֹם הַאֲקַדְּמֶ֣נּוּ בְעוֹל֔וֹת בַּעֲגָלִ֖ים בְּנֵ֥י שָׁנָֽה׃

Recognizing the many kindnesses God has performed for them, the Israelites, guided by their prophet, search for the proper way to approach and appease Him [מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא, אברבנאל]. Some understand this search for connection as a specific historical moment, representing the people's plea for a path to repentance after their failure in the sin of Baal Peor [מלבי״ם]. They wonder what kind of gift or offering would be worthy enough to find favor in His eyes [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון].

Beyond a simple request for instructions, this question carries a deeper requirement of humility. To approach God properly, a person must come with a profound sense of self-nullification, recognizing that all worldly possessions amount to nothing. Since everything already belongs to God, it is impossible for a human being to truly give Him anything [נחל שורק, חומת אנך]. Therefore, the approach requires complete submission, bending and bowing like a servant bringing a tribute to a master [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מצודת ציון].

This complex dynamic of standing before the Divine is reflected in the dual recognition of His nature. He is first approached as the Creator who embodies mercy, but immediately after, He is recognized as the God of heaven who represents strict justice. A sinner understands the absolute necessity to bow and surrender, particularly when facing this attribute of strict judgment [מלבי״ם].

In their deep desire to atone, the people ask if they should bring the finest and choicest physical sacrifices, such as perfect year-old calves [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. Yet, this question is ultimately rhetorical. God has no physical need for gifts and derives no benefit from animal offerings [מצודת דוד]. Instead of a heavy burden of external sacrifices or grand public rituals, God demands internal, practical devotion. The true path to Him is found through acting justly with others, loving kindness, and walking humbly and privately in faith [נחל שורק, אברבנאל].
