פרשת במדבר

Numbers 2:1Sefaria

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃

Following the completion of the census of the Israelites, the time arrives to shape the physical and spiritual layout of the desert camp. The divine instructions shift from simply counting the people to carefully organizing them into specific camps and banners. This arrangement is not merely a logistical necessity. Instead, it is designed to place the Tabernacle at the very center of the nation. By doing so, each tribe finds its proper place within God's order, functioning much like the organs of a body that surround the heart and work together in perfect harmony [אברבנאל].

God directs these instructions to both Moses and Aaron, a noticeable change from the previous census command which was given to Moses alone. Commentators offer two main perspectives to explain Aaron's inclusion. The primary approach among commentators points to a practical reason [אבן עזרא, הטור הארוך]. Aaron is included because the upcoming instructions directly involve him and his sons. They hold the responsibility of overseeing the transport of the holy vessels, which are to be carried on the shoulders of the sons of Kohath.

On the other hand, a deeper educational and spiritual meaning is found in Aaron's participation [רש ר הירש]. While Moses represents the transmission of the law and its practical application, Aaron the Priest symbolizes the effort to bring the people—both individuals and families—closer to living by those teachings. His involvement highlights that arranging the tribes around the Tabernacle is more than just a physical layout. It is an educational process meant to make the Torah the beating heart of the entire nation. The precise structure, where the people camp at a respectful distance yet surround the Tabernacle on all sides, is intended to instill an awareness of holiness in every single person in the camp, from the leaders of the tribes down to the youngest child.
