Proverbs 27:21Sefaria

מַצְרֵ֣ף לַ֭כֶּסֶף וְכ֣וּר לַזָּהָ֑ב וְ֝אִ֗ישׁ לְפִ֣י מַהֲלָלֽוֹ׃

Testing the true inner nature of a human being is a complex process, as a person's character is usually hidden from the eye. Just as precious metals require fire to reveal their purity, the human spirit is measured and refined through its own unique methods. In the world of metalworking, a crucible is used to melt silver and separate it from its impurities, while a furnace provides an even more intense heat specifically designed to refine gold [רש״י, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Just as a craftsman melts down metal to burn away the waste and discover its true quality, a person is tested through the concept of praise.

The primary approach among commentators is that an individual is measured by the praise they receive from society. When people speak highly of someone's good deeds, it serves as a test that reflects their inner completeness and positive character. This evaluation even acts as a measure of a person's eternal spiritual standing. The words spoken in honor of an individual after their passing indicate whether their life's path led to eternity or destruction [אלשיך].

On the other hand, a different perspective views this test in the exact opposite way, focusing on how a person praises themselves. A truly whole individual, who recognizes the greatness of God and their own smallness within creation, remains humble. Such a person does not boast about their wisdom or accomplishments. Therefore, if someone frequently praises themselves, it is a clear sign of an inner flaw [עמנואל הרומי].

Another approach focuses on the difference between the tools used for melting metals. Because gold is more valuable than silver, it requires the extreme heat of a furnace to remove every single flaw. Similarly, a person is tested according to their personal level of greatness. The more praised, important, and great an individual is, the more strictly they are judged for even the slightest shortcoming. As a result, they may face more difficult struggles and harder tests than an ordinary person in order to be completely purified [מלבי״ם].

A final spiritual approach shifts the focus of praise to the realm of prayer, specifically the praise that a person directs toward God. According to this view, the true test of a person's purity is found in how they pray. An individual's true character is revealed by their ability to focus their mind completely during the standing prayer without any outside distracting thoughts. Through this deep focus, they are able to clarify and elevate sparks of holiness [חומת אנך].
