Relationships are often judged by outward appearances, but the true intentions of the heart can reveal a completely different reality. Sometimes, genuine love requires causing pain, while hatred hides behind gestures of affection and temptation. Honest criticism stands in direct opposition to false flattery. A painful correction from a true friend may feel like a physical blow that draws blood [מצודת ציון], taking the form of harsh rebuke or severe scolding [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, these painful moments are actually strong [אבן עזרא], useful, and perfectly fulfill their purpose [מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. The primary approach among commentators is that because the intention is pure, the difficult correction is ultimately fitting and accepted by the heart [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A loving friend offers this painful guidance to bring a person back to the right path, prevent them from doing wrong, or save them from the harm of others [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. Even though the criticism hurts, it stems from sincere love and successfully achieves its goal [אלשיך, עמנואל הרומי].

In stark contrast, the affection of an enemy is heavy, thick, and overwhelming [רש״י, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא]. These outward displays of love are numerous but entirely useless, acting only as a heavy burden [מצודת דוד, אמרי דעת]. An enemy showers a person with false flattery to avoid correcting their mistakes. The hidden motive behind this fake affection is to cause the person to stumble, encourage them to continue their bad behavior, and ultimately trap them [רלב״ג, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

Beyond human relationships, this dynamic also applies to the internal and spiritual struggles within a person. The loving friend represents the human intellect, which disciplines the physical body to prevent it from being dragged down by harmful desires. The enemy, however, represents the evil inclination, which tempts a person with illusions of pleasure and empty games [עמנואל הרומי]. On an even deeper level, these painful but faithful corrections symbolize the suffering that God brings upon righteous people in this world out of love, ensuring they receive ultimate goodness in the future. Conversely, the false affection of the enemy represents the immediate wealth and success that the evil inclination grants to wicked people, with the sole purpose of misleading and destroying them [אלשיך].
