Giving charity is an act of immense power, yielding both physical and spiritual rewards. Sages consider this practice the clearest proof of the profound impact that generosity has on a person's life [תורה תמימה].
A truly generous individual distributes wealth to many different people in need. However, this widespread distribution is not reckless. Rather than giving away everything and being left with nothing, the giver calculates the support according to their actual financial ability [רד״ק]. Another perspective suggests that the giver acts like a lavish spender exclusively when helping the poor, while maintaining strict limits on their own private household expenses [אלשיך].
The process of giving also requires deep social sensitivity. To protect the dignity of the poor, the giver might first offer the money as a loan, preventing any feelings of shame. Only afterward does the giver forgive the debt entirely, transforming the financial support into a complete and absolute gift [אלשיך].
Supporting members of one's society is fundamentally a matter of justice and fairness [אבן עזרא]. Because of this integrity, the merit of the charity endures forever, protecting the giver and their descendants while securing their reward in the World to Come [רד״ק, אלשיך, מצודת דוד]. The spiritual power of this generosity is so immense that it can atone even for intentional sins. No wrongdoing can ever extinguish the eternal merit generated by such selfless giving [חומת אנך].
Alongside these eternal spiritual benefits, the giver receives immediate physical blessings in this world. They are promised never to face poverty as a result of their generosity. On the contrary, God will bless their wealth, enabling them to continue giving from a place of constant abundance [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. As their spiritual reward awaits them in the next world, their status in this world is elevated with great honor [מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. This elevation represents an increase in personal power, strength, and influence [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מאירי]. Ultimately, the generous person earns an excellent reputation and great prominence [ביאור שטיינזלץ], enjoying wealth and deep respect from everyone in their community [אלשיך].
