A righteous individual is defined by a deep inner security that serves as a shield against anxiety and external threats. This profound confidence comes from a state of complete reliance on God. The primary approach among commentators is that such a person leans entirely on God, allowing them to walk with steady assurance at all times without fearing anyone or any danger. This unwavering trust is rooted in the knowledge that their thoughts are pure [אלשיך] and that their own righteousness acts as a reliable support [מלבי״ם]. While this sense of security is a constant state, it becomes especially vital during moments of personal distress brought about by enemies [אבן עזרא].

Because of this deep reliance on God, the righteous person remains entirely unafraid of those who harbor evil intentions. This fearlessness persists right up to the moment they witness the complete downfall of their opponents and the justice brought upon them [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ, המאירי]. There is a fascinating psychological element to this experience. Typically, a person consumed by fear is too overwhelmed to pay attention to the defeat of their enemies. However, because the righteous individual possesses a calm and secure heart, they have the peace of mind necessary to actually observe and recognize this justice taking place [מצודת דוד].

This dynamic reveals a powerful progression. The trusting person is not merely protected from harm; their experience escalates to the point where they actively witness the collapse of those who oppose them [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, the timeframe leading up to this victory does not imply that their trust ends once the enemies are defeated. On the contrary, if their reliance on God remains steadfast throughout the threat, their heart will naturally grow even more secure and peaceful after seeing the threat removed [המאירי].
