תהלים, פרק קי״ד, פסוק ו׳

A direct question is posed to the forces of nature, expressing deep wonder at their unusual and excited behavior during times of great miracles. The massive mountains and hills are asked why they suddenly lose their stillness, jumping and dancing like rams and young sheep [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. The primary mystery is what could possibly cause these heavy, unmoving peaks to leap in such a way during the miraculous splitting of the Red Sea [אלשיך].

The answer to this dramatic question eventually brings together all the strange natural events that took place, from the sudden retreat of the sea and the river to the restless movement of the mountains. These actions are not random; they are a deep physical reaction of dread and trembling from the entire earth. The mountains shake violently out of pure fear and awe in the presence of God. As the absolute master of creation, He can easily change the laws of nature at His will, just as He turned the sea into dry land and transformed solid flint rock into a flowing spring of water [מאירי].
