תהלים, פרק ק״כ, פסוק ב׳

Psalms 120:2Sefaria

יְֽהֹוָ֗ה הַצִּ֣ילָה נַ֭פְשִׁי מִשְּׂפַת־שֶׁ֑קֶר מִלָּשׁ֥וֹן רְמִיָּֽה׃

A desperate cry rises from a reality of exile and hostility, where the greatest threat comes not from physical weapons, but from the destructive power of speech. This vulnerability is especially characteristic of life in exile [המאירי]. The plea is for God to grant immediate rescue from enemies who use words to cause harm, set traps, and invent false accusations. The victim cannot afford to wait for the wicked to eventually face the consequences of their own evil; urgent salvation is necessary [מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that this is a plea for protection against malicious individuals who hunt others using false plots [רש״י] and spread damaging lies [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The danger posed by these enemies extends well beyond external harm or a ruined reputation. There is a profound spiritual threat at play. The desperate request for God's protection stems from a deep fear that the victim might actually begin to accept and believe the lies being spread, which would ultimately defile his own soul [אלשיך].

A central concept among the commentators is the fundamental difference between two distinct types of harmful speech. The first type represents the simple, external lie. This involves slander and falsehoods spoken about a person behind his back. The second type, however, describes a much deeper and more dangerous layer of communication. It involves internal cunning, schemes, and hypocrisy spoken directly to a person's face. In this scenario, the enemy speaks smoothly and presents himself as a loving friend, all while hiding a malicious ambush in his heart [מלבי״ם, המאירי]. This form of deceit carries an especially severe risk because it dresses up and beautifies the lie, making it incredibly easy for the listener to be misled and fall for the deception [אלשיך].
