תהלים, פרק ק״ל, פסוק ב׳

Psalms 130:2Sefaria

From a place of profound distress, a desperate cry rises upward as a person pleads for God to hear their call [אבן עזרא]. This plea unfolds in two distinct stages, reflecting an emotional and spiritual progression. One perspective views this dual request as a gradual deepening of the prayer. Initially, the individual simply asks for the prayer to be accepted and for their basic wish to be granted. As the prayer continues, it evolves into a much deeper appeal. The person asks God not just to hear the request, but to pay close attention to the very quality of their voice, the careful way they present their words, and the underlying justice of their claims [מלבי״ם].

Alternatively, this repeated plea can be understood through the lens of human imperfection. Standing before the Creator, the individual recognizes their own flaws. When addressing God from a position of strict justice, the person asks Him to focus purely on the spoken words. There is a fear that God might judge the heart, which may not be completely submissive or entirely perfect in its repentance due to the heavy burdens and suffering of exile. Even if a simple call is insufficient and requires an outpouring of pleas, the individual begs God to listen despite these internal shortcomings [אלשיך].

Beyond the fear of judgment, there is a profound layer of love between God and the person praying. Even if God has already decided to grant the request before the words are fully spoken, the individual still asks Him to continue listening. This stems from a deep inner knowledge that God desires a relationship with them and genuinely rejoices in hearing their voice [אלשיך].
