תהלים, פרק ק״נ, פסוק ג׳

Psalms 150:3Sefaria

הַ֭לְלוּהוּ בְּתֵ֣קַע שׁוֹפָ֑ר הַ֝לְל֗וּהוּ בְּנֵ֣בֶל וְכִנּֽוֹר׃

Music possesses a profound ability to awaken the human heart, elevating the praise of God so that it is expressed with deep affection and heightened emotion [מאירי]. This musical worship begins with the powerful, piercing blast of the ram's horn, a call that also encompasses the sound of trumpets [רד״ק]. These loud, firm blasts project an atmosphere of majesty and royal splendor [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Hearing such a commanding sound naturally stirs a sense of trembling within the listener, representing a profound awe of God's ultimate greatness [מלבי״ם].

The ram's horn is distinctly tied to the Jewish New Year, serving as a spiritual alarm meant to inspire repentance so that a person may be written in the Book of Life. Praising God with this specific instrument is an expression of pure gratitude to Him for providing humanity with a pathway to regret and atonement [אלשיך]. This thematic connection is further highlighted by the ten distinct expressions of praise found throughout the chapter. These ten praises mirror the ten verses of Kingship recited during the additional prayer of the New Year, and some suggest they parallel the Ten Commandments [תורה תמימה].

Following the intense blast of the horn, the music transitions to the softer, more delicate notes of stringed instruments, specifically the lute and the harp [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The lute, understood to be an instrument designed with ten holes [אבן עזרא], produces a gentle, low resonance. This quiet sound symbolizes the humble submission a person must feel when standing before the Creator [אלשיך], while simultaneously evoking a sense of immense joy [מלבי״ם].

Moving from the piercing horn to the gentle strings reflects a continuous spiritual journey. It traces the path from the fearful judgment and repentance of the New Year to the pure, complete joy of the Festival of Tabernacles and the Water-Drawing Celebration, a time historically celebrated with an abundance of stringed music [אלשיך]. Together, these contrasting instruments represent a whole and balanced service of God. They perfectly blend the awe of His majesty with deep happiness, capturing the ideal spiritual state of rejoicing with trembling [מלבי״ם].
