הָפַ֣כְתָּ מִסְפְּדִי֮ לְמָח֢וֹל לִ֥֫י פִּתַּ֥חְתָּ שַׂקִּ֑י וַֽתְּאַזְּרֵ֥נִי שִׂמְחָֽה׃

A sudden shift from the depths of despair to the heights of joy forms the heart of human gratitude toward God. When divine rescue arrives, it brings a complete transformation, altering not only a person's inner emotional state but also the outward symbols of their grief. The bitter tears shed over a harsh fate are entirely replaced by celebration [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. One perspective pictures a dramatic scene where a crowd has already gathered to mourn a person believed to be dead. Suddenly, life returns to his body, and the gathered mourners break into joyous, circling dances [מלבי״ם, מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators views this profound shift through the personal experience of King David. Distraught over his own failings, he mourned for his soul. Yet, the moment a prophet informed him that God had forgiven his sin and spared his life, his mourning garments were removed and replaced by the sheer relief of divine pardon [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. In this light, the garments of grief and the spoken eulogies serve as a broader metaphor for the profound sorrow of the human soul [אבן עזרא]. Alternatively, this transformation is seen as a testament to God's constant way of governing the world. It is applied to the miracle of Purim, representing the collective thanksgiving of Mordecai and the Israelites after they were saved from Haman's decree of destruction [רש״י]. Furthermore, the powerful concept of turning bad into good led the Talmudic sages to establish a practice for anyone who experiences a frightening dream. Seeking comfort, the dreamer gathers three loved ones to declare that the ominous vision will be transformed from grief into joy and peace [תורה תמימה].
