תהלים, פרק ל׳, פסוק ז׳

Psalms 30:7Sefaria

וַ֭אֲנִי אָמַ֣רְתִּי בְשַׁלְוִ֑י בַּל־אֶמּ֥וֹט לְעוֹלָֽם׃

Human nature often leads people to sink into an illusion of eternal stability whenever life goes smoothly. The primary approach among commentators is that during times of peace, quiet, and success, a person naturally assumes they will never fall or lose their current standing [מצודת דוד]. This false sense of security stems from the belief that the world will simply continue its safe, predictable routine forever [שטיינזלץ].

This illusion is especially clear when it comes to physical health. A strong, healthy individual tends to believe their strength will always endure and that their body is immune to illness [אבן עזרא]. They assume that as long as their physical systems operate in a natural balance, they will never collapse. However, this mindset completely ignores the reality that life and health are not guaranteed, but depend entirely on the will and care of God. The moment God hides His face and removes His watchful protection, that imagined stability crumbles instantly, leaving the person overwhelmed with anxiety [רש״י, מלבי״ם].

Beyond the physical and material world, this false sense of security also exists on a spiritual level. When a person successfully overcomes their negative urges and allows their mind to rule over their base nature, they might become boastful, thinking they will never sin or stumble again. Yet, this too is a mistake. Standing firm against temptation is only possible through God's ongoing help [רד״ק].

In contrast to the idea of temporary complacency, a completely different approach views this state of peace not as an illusion, but as an ultimate purpose. According to this perspective, the hardships a person faces are not meant to destroy them. Rather, these troubles are given specifically to ensure their future peace. Through this challenging process, the individual eventually achieves a genuine, lasting stability where they will never fall [מאירי].
