The relationship between God and humanity reaches its peak not as a one-sided decree, but as a mutual covenant of choice and destiny that brings deep happiness and special care. This profound joy applies equally to both sides of the relationship [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators highlights this dual dynamic. On one side, a nation willingly embraces God, rejecting false beliefs and idolatry to recognize Him as the ultimate Judge and Guide of creation. In response, God makes a parallel choice, claiming that nation as His treasured possession and inheritance [רד״ק, מאירי]. Rooted in this faith, the people understand that every event in their lives, whether favorable or challenging, is guided by God's direct providence in response to their actions, rather than mere natural chance [רד״ק].

When considering which nation achieves this bond, commentators offer different perspectives. One view maintains that this profound closeness is not universally available to any society that simply desires it. Instead, it is exclusively reserved for the Israelites, who were selected at the dawn of history during the separation of nations because of the unique spiritual root of their souls [אלשיך]. Conversely, another approach suggests a broader, two-tiered system of connection, reflecting different levels of national greatness. On the foundational level, any nation in the world that chooses to believe in God and serve Him can attain a relationship with Him and benefit from His guiding providence. However, a higher level of existence is reserved for the specific nation that God actively chooses as His own. While the first group experiences standard divine guidance, this specially chosen nation receives miraculous and wondrous providence that completely transcends the natural order [מלבי״ם].
