Psalms 52:5Sefaria

The nature of a person who spreads malicious gossip goes far beyond merely sharing information. It reveals a conscious, twisted choice to prefer destruction over peace and falsehood over truth. This dark reality exposes the corrupt inner motive that led Doeg the Edomite to cause the tragic massacre of the priests in the city of Nob. The primary approach among commentators is that rather than simply failing to do good, such an individual actively loves evil more than good, and prefers lies over speaking righteousness, which is the enduring truth This crooked path is not a temporary lapse but a lifelong defining trait, serving as a constant and emphatic reality of his character

This deep-seated love for evil and deceit shows itself in several ways. When presented with a mixture of good and bad traits in another person, the deceiver hides the good and highlights only the negative. Faced with a choice between truth and lies, he naturally chooses the lie [חומת אנך]. In the historical event involving Doeg, his actions were not an innocent mistake. He deliberately left out crucial positive facts, such as the reality that Ahimelech the priest had no idea David was fleeing from Saul. If Doeg had wanted to, he could have shared the simple truth of Ahimelech's innocence. Instead, he chose to invent lies, falsely claiming that the priest knew about the escape, thereby sealing the fate of the priests to a tragic death A person with such a destructive appetite will even latch onto the faintest hint from someone who hesitates to speak poorly of another, using that tiny opening to construct a massive web of false accusations [חומת אנך].

A unique perspective views this dynamic from a different angle. The informer might try to defend himself by claiming he merely reported the facts exactly as they happened, arguing that lying is strictly forbidden. However, this defense is completely rejected. In certain situations, it is acceptable and even desirable to alter the truth to preserve peace. A factual truth that brings about death and destruction is, in reality, evil. Conversely, a technical lie told to save lives and promote peace is considered good. Therefore, by clinging to a deadly, destructive truth and refusing to use a life-saving deviation from the facts, the informer proves that he truly loves evil more than good [אלשיך].
