Psalms 52:4Sefaria

The destructive power of human speech can transform mere words into a lethal weapon, executing a person's most malicious thoughts. The primary approach among commentators is to view this malicious intent as pure ruin and destruction. However, another perspective suggests that spoken words literally bring wicked thoughts into existence, making them a physical reality [אבן עזרא]. This destruction carries a dual purpose, reflecting a double intent to cause harm. Historically, this points to the actions of Doeg the Edomite, whose words were calculated both to bring about the slaughter of the priest Ahimelech and to incite King Saul to hunt down David [אלשיך].

Strangely, the act of planning and thinking is attributed directly to the tongue, even though thought originates in the mind and heart. Commentators agree that the tongue is described this way because it serves as the heart's messenger. It exposes the hidden depths of a person's inner world, acting almost like the pen of the heart

This harmful speech is compared to a highly sharpened razor that acts with deceit. The deceitful nature of this razor can be understood in a few ways. Some explain that the blade glides smoothly over the skin, masking the fact that it is actually slicing into the flesh along with the hair Another perspective explains the deceit in terms of intent versus outcome. A person intends to make a small cut to remove a minor blemish, but the sharp blade slips and cuts deeply, potentially severing the head entirely

This metaphor perfectly captures the historical tragedy of Doeg. Just as a razor cuts far deeper than intended, Doeg spoke only a few words, yet the resulting damage was catastrophic. His speech led to the massacre of eighty-five priests of the city of Nob along with their families Doeg tried to present his words as a righteous act of loyalty, claiming he simply wanted to remove a threat to King Saul. In reality, driven by deep hatred, his deceitful tongue functioned exactly like the treacherous razor, shedding innocent blood under the guise of protection [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].
