King David composed this prayer as a desperate plea while fleeing from those who sought his life [רד״ק, מאירי]. The primary approach among commentators is that these words are rooted deeply in a period of intense wandering and hardship. During this time, relentless opponents plotted against David, hunted him down, and actively tried to kill him [מאירי].

While some view this backdrop of escape and survival in a general sense, others trace the prayer to a specific historical conflict. In this view, David directed his plea against Doeg the Edomite and his associates. These enemies devised wicked plans against David, yet their schemes ultimately failed. In the end, they were caught in the exact trap and snare they had carefully set for him [מלבי״ם].
