Psalms 64:9Sefaria

The downfall of those who plot evil often stems from the very traps they lay for others, as their primary weapon ultimately becomes the source of their own destruction. The primary approach among commentators is that the harm and obstacles the wicked intended to inflict on others reverse course, striking the perpetrators themselves This serves as a direct counterweight to their earlier actions, where they deliberately sharpened their words to cause pain [אבן עזרא]. Ultimately, it is their own speech that brings about their ruin [רד"ק, מאירי]. A unique perspective suggests a more direct divine intervention: God forces their words to fail them against their will. Through this, their hidden crimes and secret plots are publicly exposed, much like how Balaam lost control of his own speech [אלשיך].

As this sudden collapse occurs, the surrounding observers react physically, specifically by shaking or moving their heads [מצודת ציון]. Commentators offer different interpretations of this gesture. One approach views this head-shaking as an expression of laughter and mockery directed at the wicked who have now fallen into their own trap Conversely, another perspective sees this as a reaction of deep shock, anxiety, and astonishment. The sudden and chaotic nature of the downfall leaves onlookers stunned, ultimately awakening a profound reverence for God [רד"ק, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Building on the idea that the hidden crimes of the wicked are laid bare, this physical reaction can also reflect sheer wonder at the sudden punishment, or a deep recognition that the disaster falling upon the wicked is an exact match for their own cruelty [אלשיך].
