Psalms 64:6Sefaria

Those who seek to cause harm rarely settle for superficial plans; instead, they invest calculated effort into their schemes, masking their intentions behind a false sense of immunity. As they develop their plots for their own benefit [מצודת ציון], they operate on several levels. The primary approach among commentators is that these individuals actively encourage and embolden one another to carry out their dark intentions. However, this reinforcement can also take the form of building up false claims with seemingly strong arguments, carefully dressing up their wickedness to look like absolute justice [רד״ק, מאירי]. Additionally, the very fact that they gather the support of the masses gives them the strength to push forward [אלשיך].

To ensure their success, the conspirators consult privately on how to perfectly conceal their traps. The goal of this extreme secrecy is to keep the victim completely unaware of the looming danger, preventing them from protecting themselves or setting up any counter-ambushes [אלשיך]. This type of calculated deception is tied to specific historical events. For instance, it reflects the actions of those who secretly set traps for King David by feeding lies to King Saul. Unlike enemies who operated out in the open, these conspirators worked in the shadows, terrified that David would eventually take the throne and exact revenge [רד״ק]. In contrast, this behavior also mirrors the story of Daniel, where royal ministers deceitfully manipulated King Darius into passing a law designed to destroy Daniel, all while keeping the king entirely blind to their true, hidden motive [רש״י, מצודת דוד].

Empowered by their successful camouflage, the plotters convince themselves that they are entirely invisible. This arrogant belief that no one sees them manifests in two distinct ways. First, it represents a complete denial of divine oversight, rooted in the assumption that God Himself does not notice their hidden actions [רד״ק, מאירי]. Second, it reflects their successful deception of human authority. They operate with absolute confidence that the ruling monarch has no idea that their seemingly innocent advice and elaborate plots are actually targeted at bringing down a specific individual [מצודת דוד].
