Psalms 93:1Sefaria

Recognizing God’s absolute rule over the world introduces a tension between His infinite power and the physical stability of reality. Rather than destabilizing the universe, the revelation of divine kingship is the very foundation that keeps the world secure.

Commentators offer different perspectives on when this ultimate kingship takes place. One approach views this as a picture of the world's creation, capturing the moment God formed the universe from nothing and established the laws of nature Conversely, the primary approach among commentators is that this vision points toward the future Messianic era. In that time, all of humanity will acknowledge God's rule, wickedness will be brought low, and the earth will rejoice in His leadership

To convey God's appearance, the imagery of human royalty is utilized. God is pictured as wearing garments of honor and glory, securing a belt of power around His waist However, a deep contrast exists between a mortal king and the King of Heaven. While human leaders sometimes need to act humbly to win the affection of their people, God reveals His rule specifically through immense majesty and strength [אלשיך]. Furthermore, while human pride generally leads to destruction and instability, divine majesty is the exact force that sustains the world [המאירי]. In the future, the arrogance of mortal kings will disappear, and everyone will recognize that the garments of true majesty belong to God alone [רד"ק].

God’s leadership operates through a dual system, balancing two distinct forces. On one hand, there is strength, which represents the fixed, unchanging laws of nature. On the other hand, there is majesty, representing miraculous leadership where God rises above natural laws and alters them. The profound wonder is that even when God performs open miracles and displays His majesty, He remains firmly belted with strength. He continues to maintain the overall natural system, ensuring the world is not destroyed by localized, miraculous changes [מלבי"ם].

As a result of this perfect rule, the world becomes firmly established and safe from collapse [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This enduring stability takes several forms. It means the physical earth stands secure in its place [אבן עזרא]. It points to a future where wars cease and those who agitate the earth disappear [רד"ק]. Finally, it reflects God's infinite patience, as He uses His great strength to keep the world running even when people fail to do His will [אלשיך].
