תהלים, פרק צ״ט, פסוק ט׳

Psalms 99:9Sefaria

רוֹמְמ֡וּ יְ֘הֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ וְֽ֭הִשְׁתַּחֲווּ לְהַ֣ר קׇדְשׁ֑וֹ כִּי־קָ֝ד֗וֹשׁ יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ {פ}

The call to elevate God and bow before His dwelling place captures a profound balance between His majestic presence in the world and His intimate care for humanity. Giving honor and praise to God [ביאור שטיינזלץ] is a natural response that awakens particularly when reflecting on the deeds He performs for those who love Him [רד״ק]. This call to worship also served as a guiding instruction for people as they departed from the Temple, ensuring they carried this reverence with them [אבן עזרא].

Directing worship toward Mount Moriah and the Temple raises a fundamental question about the true focus of this reverence. While the physical act of bowing is oriented toward the mountain or the sanctuary, the devotion of the heart is directed exclusively to God [אבן עזרא]. Facing the sacred site is not an act of worshipping the physical location. Rather, it is a focused method to awaken the heart, serving as a constant reminder to keep God at the forefront of one's thoughts. True awe is never directed at the building itself, but at the One who chose to sanctify that space and rest His glory within it [רד״ק, מאירי].

Because God is holy, anything associated with Him commands deep respect [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Consequently, the sanctity of the mountain is absolute and eternal, remaining completely intact even during times when the Temple does not stand upon it [אלשיך]. The ultimate justification for this physical and spiritual reverence lies in the recognition of God's close relationship with His people. He does not remain confined to the distant heavens; His presence is immediate, dwelling directly among the nation on His holy mountain [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, His holiness is actively revealed and established in the world through His strict justice, as He holds the righteous to the most exacting standards [רש״י].
