Zechariah 7:14Sefaria

וְאֵ֣סָעֲרֵ֗ם עַ֤ל כׇּל־הַגּוֹיִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־יְדָע֔וּם וְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ נָשַׁ֣מָּה אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֔ם מֵֽעֹבֵ֖ר וּמִשָּׁ֑ב וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ אֶֽרֶץ־חֶמְדָּ֖ה לְשַׁמָּֽה׃ {פ}

The tragic results of a closed heart and a refusal to listen to God eventually reach their breaking point. After ignoring repeated warnings, the Israelites faced a violent uprooting and complete destruction. They were scattered into exile among foreign nations they had never known, blown in every direction like a fierce storm The nature of this scattering prompts different thoughts One approach explains that God drove them away using the storm of His spirit [אבן עזרא]. Another sensitive perspective suggests that God actually enters the storm alongside the people, experiencing the sadness and suffering of exile right there with them [רד״ק].

Following this forced departure, the land was left entirely empty and ruined, without even a single passerby This total emptiness was the complete opposite of the days when the region was peaceful and full of life [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. The blame for this dramatic shift falls directly on the people. God asked them for good deeds rather than empty fasts, but they chose to stick to their bad habits. Through their own sins, they turned a highly desired country into a wasteland

This ruin is not just a historical event but a continuous reality. As long as the people keep their hearts closed and refuse to listen to God even after the initial destruction, they are using their own hands to keep the land in a state of emptiness [מלבי״ם]. However, from this deep pain comes a seed of hope. The same destruction that caused the days of fasting and sadness will eventually lead God to fiercely protect Zion and bring justice against the nations that ruined it [רש״י].
