Esther 2:11Sefaria

The daily pacing of a guardian outside the royal women's compound reflects a profound concern for a young woman taken against her will to the palace. This routine was not merely an expression of personal affection and fatherly care [ביאור שטיינזלץ], but a complex maneuver involving immense danger, political tact, and a sense of historical destiny. Mordecai's frequent presence in such a sensitive and restricted area was only possible due to his high-ranking position as an official or judge sitting at the king's gate This status allowed him to casually inquire about a foreign woman without arousing suspicion regarding their family ties [עמנואל הרומי]. The danger, however, was severe. Mordecai feared for Esther's life, knowing that if she were discovered hiding her origins as he had instructed, the king might punish or banish her for her disobedience. Furthermore, this secrecy was crucial to prevent a scenario where the king, upon discovering her true identity, might direct his wrath against all the Jews, accusing them of teaching her to deceive him

Mordecai's inquiries into Esther's welfare covered a wide spectrum of anxieties. On a physical level, he sought to verify her health and whether she needed medical attention, gathering information that may have been passed to him through secret letters Socially and emotionally, he worried that the other women, envious of her beauty, might harass her over her refusal to reveal her background. Such friction could take a physical toll on her, potentially causing the king to reject her [ישע אלהים]. This jealousy also sparked the fear that the women might attempt to harm her through sorcery Another layer of concern involved her ritual purity. Mordecai and Esther made every effort to ensure she maintained her purity to the greatest extent possible ahead of her forced encounter with the king

As he monitored the situation, the primary approach among commentators is that Mordecai wanted to track the unfolding events to see if she would indeed be taken to the king, hoping the outcome would be positive and she would be chosen as queen Alternatively, this anticipation is viewed through a spiritual lens, suggesting an internal process. In this view, Mordecai provided Esther with mystical meditations and holy names to help spiritually separate the elements of evil from her body [נחל אשכול].

Beyond natural worry lay a profound conviction of faith. The commentators agree that Mordecai, as a righteous man attuned to heavenly signs, understood that such a righteous woman would not be taken to the bed of a foreign king without a divine purpose. He concluded that a fateful event for the Israelites was on the horizon and that they would ultimately be saved through her Therefore, his constant pacing was not only physical but also mental. He was walking through his thoughts, deeply immersed in deciphering God's unfolding plan [תורה תמימה].

Ultimately, Mordecai's devotion did not go unrewarded. God repaid him measure for measure. Because Mordecai set aside his own honor, walking the courtyards and dedicating his days to seeking the welfare of a single soul, he earned an extraordinary reward. He eventually became the leader who sought the welfare of an entire nation, remembered as one who sought the good of his people and spoke peace to all his descendants
