יחזקאל, פרק י״ד, פסוק ה׳

Ezekiel 14:5Sefaria

לְמַ֛עַן תְּפֹ֥שׂ אֶת־בֵּֽית־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּלִבָּ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר נָזֹ֙רוּ֙ מֵֽעָלַ֔י בְּגִלּוּלֵיהֶ֖ם כֻּלָּֽם׃ {ס}

Deep hypocrisy often masks itself as genuine devotion. When the leaders of the Israelites approach to seek God, they project an outward image of faithfulness, yet their inner world is entirely corrupted by idolatry. God directly confronts this deception, piercing through their pious disguise to address the root of the problem festering within their minds. Because of their idol worship, the people have become completely alienated and estranged from God [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His response is designed to take hold of their hearts, though the purpose of this divine grasp is understood in several ways.

One perspective views God's reaction as an act of exposure and rebuke. The Israelites believe they can conceal their dark intentions, but God brings their inner corruption into the light, proving that no one can hide from His judgment [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Furthermore, in the specific case of idolatry, God holds a person accountable for their thoughts just as severely as their physical actions. Even if the people in exile only worship idols in their minds without physically bowing to them, God treats their mental betrayal as a fully realized sin [רד״ק].

Alternatively, this intervention carries a positive purpose aimed at healing the rift. Instead of ignoring their hypocritical request, God answers them specifically to capture their hearts and draw them close once again. When the people realize that God still responds to them despite their deeply flawed intentions, it will awaken them to His reality and inspire genuine repentance [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רד״ק].

A contrasting viewpoint directs the focus toward the malicious intent of the leaders themselves. In this view, the elders—who may actually be false prophets—approach with the goal of twisting the divine message. The general population has already distanced themselves from God through their actions. Now, these corrupt leaders seek to capture the minds of the people as well, aiming to completely ruin their thoughts and sever their relationship with God entirely [מלבי״ם].
