Ezekiel 14:8Sefaria

וְנָתַתִּ֨י פָנַ֜י בָּאִ֣ישׁ הַה֗וּא וַהֲשִׂמֹתִ֙יהוּ֙ לְא֣וֹת וְלִמְשָׁלִ֔ים וְהִכְרַתִּ֖יו מִתּ֣וֹךְ עַמִּ֑י וִידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּי־אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָֽה׃ {ס}

When individuals approach God for guidance while secretly harboring loyalty to idols, the response they receive is not divine wisdom, but a devastating public warning. The prophet speaks with anger to the distinguished leaders sitting before him, making it clear that God's direct attention toward them will actually be the very source of their punishment

The nature of this divine attention is understood in two main ways. One approach explains that God directs His focus entirely toward punishing the wrongdoer, much like a person who drops all other affairs to concentrate on a single task Another perspective suggests that this focused attention represents intense divine anger, as fury is naturally visible on a person's face This severe reaction follows the person's stubborn refusal to listen to the prophet's earlier warnings [רש״י].

The resulting punishment brings absolute ruin and destruction upon the sinner The primary approach among commentators is that the purpose of this heavy devastation is to transform the wrongdoer into a living example. By making the punishment so severe and unusual, it serves as a warning story to deter others from approaching God with corrupt intentions. People will even use the sinner's tragic state as a common reference point to describe other disasters and ruins

This process of punishment unfolds in distinct stages. During the sinner's lifetime, the afflictions striking him act as a warning sign to his rebellious generation. After his death, his fate becomes a cautionary tale about the consequences of wickedness. Ultimately, he is entirely cut off, suffering the complete loss of his name and memory from future generations [מלבי״ם]. Through this entire sequence of events, a broader purpose is achieved: the public comes to recognize that God faithfully delivers fitting consequences to every person based on their actions [מצודת דוד].
