יחזקאל, פרק ל״ה, פסוק ט״ו

Ezekiel 35:15Sefaria

כְּשִׂמְחָ֨תְךָ֜ לְנַחֲלַ֧ת בֵּֽית־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל עַ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־שָׁמֵ֖מָה כֵּ֣ן אֶעֱשֶׂה־לָּ֑ךְ שְׁמָמָ֨ה תִהְיֶ֤ה הַר־שֵׂעִיר֙ וְכׇל־אֱד֣וֹם כֻּלָּ֔הּ וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּי־אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}

The downfall of a nation often mirrors its own past cruelty. When a people celebrates the ruin of another, their ultimate judgment reflects that exact malice, demonstrating a perfect balance of divine justice. Edom exhibited deep, malicious joy when the Israelites faced destruction and lost their homeland. Because of this, God's justice dictates a precise, proportional response. The punishment is designed to match their crime exactly. Just as Edom celebrated the fall of Israel, others will eventually celebrate the fall of Edom, and the intensity of this future rejoicing will perfectly mirror the joy Edom once felt [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

This impending ruin is directed not merely at the physical landscape of the region, but at the entire congregation and people of Edom [רד״ק]. Furthermore, the nature of their desolation is fundamentally different from the temporary setbacks experienced by the Israelites. Because the Edomites spoke directly against God, their punishment is permanent [מלבי״ם]. Historically, this collapse did not happen overnight. The people remained in their land for many years, gradually diminishing over time. Yet, the ultimate fulfillment of their judgment involved a series of crushing defeats that reduced their civilization to an irreversible wasteland, ensuring they would never return to their former state [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The final purpose of this devastating punishment extends beyond simple retribution. Through Edom's eternal ruin, the world will come to recognize the absolute truth of God's authority [מלבי״ם]. It stands as a lasting testament to humanity that He is completely faithful in delivering exact, measured justice for every action [מצודת דוד].
