A direct and public confrontation is about to unfold between God and His people, driven by a strict principle of measure for measure. God declares that He is stepping into open battle against the nation [מצודת דוד]. This conflict is entirely reciprocal. Because the people betrayed Him, God is now turning His hand against them [רש״י, מצודת דוד].

The severity of the response perfectly matches the uniqueness of their offense. Since the Israelites engaged in extreme behaviors unlike any other nation, God will bring upon them unprecedented disasters and rebukes [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These sweeping punishments will be unlike anything that has ever happened or will ever happen to another people [רד״ק].

Despite the harshness of these events, God's response is not an act of arbitrary anger. Every action taken against the nation is rooted deeply in pure justice and fairness [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, the execution of this justice will not happen in secret. It will take place in full view of the surrounding nations [מלבי״ם]. The intent behind this highly public display is to bring a profound sense of shame and disgrace upon the people for the evil they committed [רד״ק].
