יחזקאל, פרק ה׳, פסוק ה׳

Ezekiel 5:5Sefaria

Following prophecies of ruin delivered through symbols and parables, the focus shifts to a clear reality, placing Jerusalem at the geographic and spiritual center of the world. The choice of the city's location is not random but carries deep meaning and a moral purpose. The primary approach among commentators is that Jerusalem is positioned in the exact middle of the world, serving as the center of human settlement. This specific spot was carefully selected because it is the finest place of all, possessing the best and most comfortable climate [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. To illustrate this idea, Jerusalem is compared to a heart located in the center of a body. Just as the heart is encircled by other organs, Jerusalem is surrounded by the rest of the lands and nations [אברבנאל]. God placed the city in such an ideal and central location for the direct benefit of its people, providing them with the perfect environment to live uprightly and follow His laws [רד״ק].

Taking a different perspective, some view this geographic arrangement on a more local scale. In this approach, the surrounding nations refer to the many peoples who lived directly within the borders of the Land of Israel, such as the seven Canaanite nations. Meanwhile, the surrounding lands point to the foreign kingdoms located far outside of Israel's borders [מלבי״ם].

Recognizing Jerusalem's unique and central status only deepens the tragedy of its downfall. Even though the city was granted the most chosen location to help guide its people toward good, they decided to trade God's laws for wickedness. A deep irony lies in their actions. The foreign nations surrounding them remained loyal to their own traditions and beliefs, never abandoning them. In stark contrast, the people of Jerusalem rejected God's laws and acted with even greater wickedness than the very nations that encircled them [רד״ק, אברבנאל].
