A harsh reality faces a nation that has entirely severed its relationship with its Creator. Through persistent sin, the people have created a total disconnect from God, leading to a severe decree regarding their future and their physical place in the world.

The prophet's declaration that God will reject the people is not spoken as a curse. Rather, it is a clear, factual prophecy of the events that are about to unfold [רש״י]. In delivering this message, the prophet refers to God personally as his own God. This highlights a tragic shift in the relationship. God remains the God of the prophet, but He is no longer the God of the people, simply because they have stubbornly refused to listen to His voice [אבן עזרא, רד״ק].

Because of this continuous refusal, God will ultimately reject the nation and banish them from His presence [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. The direct consequence of this rejection is a complete uprooting. The commentators agree that this means a total exile from the Land of Israel into foreign territories. The people are destined to become wanderers, moving endlessly among various nations and the Babylonians [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
