King Rehoboam built an exceptionally large royal family. He married eighteen wives and took sixty concubines, who together bore him twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Against the backdrop of this massive household, one woman clearly stood out. The king loved Maacah far more than any of the others. Driven by this intense affection, which surpassed his feelings for all his other wives and concubines, he desired to elevate her status. He wanted to make her the primary lady of the court, establishing her as the chief and most senior woman in the entire palace [מלבי״ם].
