A nation stands on the brink of civil war, ready to crush a political rebellion, only to be stopped by a sudden prophetic intervention. This moment reveals that the division tearing the kingdom apart is not a standard political uprising, but a decree from heaven [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

God issues a multi-stage command to ensure no conflict breaks out. First, the army is forbidden from marching into the opposing cities to launch an attack. Beyond just canceling the invasion, God strictly forbids any form of combat, preventing them from even challenging the other side to a battle in an open field [מלבי״ם]. To emphasize the tragedy of their intended actions, God reminds the soldiers that they are raising weapons against their own brothers. Despite the political fracture, all Israelites remain family, descending from a single patriarch [רש״י].

The directive to halt the military campaign is absolute. The soldiers are instructed to scatter and return to their homes. They do not even need to remain armed and on standby, as there is no reason to fear a counterattack from the opposing side [מלבי״ם]. The entire military operation must be abandoned because the national split is orchestrated by God Himself. It cannot be treated as a typical rebellion to be suppressed by force [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Ultimately, the army obeys the divine instruction. They halt their advance against Jeroboam [ביאור שטיינזלץ], fully complying with the initial command to stand down and abandon the offensive [מלבי״ם].
