Initially, it is characterized by regular attacks affecting his bowels, but the periods of rest between these painful episodes steadily grow shorter. The physical deterioration continues until it reaches an extreme, final stage where the attacks occur daily. Ultimately, his intestines come completely out of his body. As his bodily systems collapse, numerous other illnesses awaken within him at the same time, leading to an incredibly painful and disgraceful death [מלבי״ם].
