דברי הימים ב, פרק כ״א, פסוק י״ח

A heavy divine punishment falls upon the king, bringing about the fulfillment of the second half of the decree issued against him [מלבי״ם]. God strikes the king with a severe physical affliction [שטיינזלץ]. The condition is entirely incurable, presenting as a terminal illness that offers no medical solution and not even a fleeting moment of temporary relief [מצודת דוד].

The intestinal disease progresses through a gradual and deeply agonizing process. Initially, it is characterized by regular attacks affecting his bowels, but the periods of rest between these painful episodes steadily grow shorter. The physical deterioration continues until it reaches an extreme, final stage where the attacks occur daily. Ultimately, his intestines come completely out of his body. As his bodily systems collapse, numerous other illnesses awaken within him at the same time, leading to an incredibly painful and disgraceful death [מלבי״ם].
