The shattering of a long-standing political arrangement between Judah and Edom marks a major turning point in the regional balance of power. Commentators unanimously agree that the roots of this rebellion lie in a lengthy history of subjugation. Going all the way back to the days of King David, who originally conquered the nation and eliminated its male population, Edom remained under the absolute control of the Kingdom of Judah. For generations, it operated as a dependent territory forced to pay regular taxes.

Throughout this long period, the people of Edom were strictly forbidden from appointing their own monarch. Instead, the kings of Judah maintained regional control by appointing their own governors to rule the area. However, during the reign of Jehoram, this dynamic completely changes. Edom actively rebels and throws off the yoke of Judah's rule. By choosing to crown their own king, the people of Edom declare their total independence. This newly appointed local monarch directly replaces the governor who had previously enforced Judah's authority, cementing their break from years of forced submission.
