The target of her purge is the Kingdom of Judah [רד״ק], specifically focusing on wiping out the royal family line [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Athaliah leads the land with an iron fist, driven by a deep wickedness that extends beyond murder. Her corrupt nature is also marked by infidelity, including bearing children from another man [אברבנאל]. A tragic chain of wrongdoing unfolds, illustrating how one sin naturally leads to another. As a wicked mother, she first corrupted her son Ahaziah to follow her evil ways, and then compounded that guilt by destroying the royal bloodline [חומת אנך]. The method of her massacre is equally chilling. Rather than a public execution, she feeds the royal family members deadly poison, quietly wiping them out as if they had been struck by a plague [חומת אנך].

Yet, behind the scenes of this horrific slaughter lies a hidden layer of divine providence. God orchestrates these events to serve a larger purpose. Through Athaliah's ruthless ambition, God ensures the complete destruction of the remaining descendants of the wicked House of Ahab. Her actions unknowingly finalize the purge of Ahab's line that was initially begun by Jehu [רלב״ג].
