I Kings 6:19Sefaria

The construction of the Temple reaches its highest point when its most sacred space is designated for its ultimate purpose, which is to serve as the permanent home for the Ark of the Covenant. To achieve this, the interior of the Temple was divided by a partition, creating a distinct inner chamber on the western side of the building [רלב"ג]. This secluded area served as the Holy of Holies [מצודת דוד, רד"ק]. Focusing on the exact nature of this division, [רש"י] identifies it as a wall exactly one cubit thick, constructed specifically to separate the main sanctuary from the Holy of Holies.

The preparation of this sacred chamber carries two distinct layers of meaning. On a practical level, the room was simply built and readied for the sole purpose of housing God's Ark [מלבי"ם, רלב"ג]. However, a deeper tradition reveals a far more complex preparation. Guided by divine inspiration, King Solomon foresaw that the Temple would one day face destruction. To protect the most sacred object within it, he excavated the ground beneath the Holy of Holies and engineered a hidden network of deep, winding underground spaces. A special stone was placed over the entrance to this secret vault, and the Ark rested directly upon it. Generations later, King Josiah utilized this very same hidden chamber to safely conceal the Ark [רד"ק, רלב"ג].
