I Kings 6:8Sefaria

The architecture of the First Temple featured a complex network of side chambers and galleries, stacked three stories high around the main hall. Navigating this intricate structure required a specific entry point and a unique method of moving between the different levels.

The main entrance to this system of chambers was located on the right side of the building, corresponding to the southern wall Commentators offer different perspectives on exactly where this entrance led. One approach suggests it simply opened into the middle, or second, floor of the complex Another perspective argues that the entrance was actually on the ground floor. According to this view, the doorway led into the middle chamber out of the five rooms situated along the bottom southern row. This specific room served as the main gateway to the entire network [רש״י, מלבי״ם]. Once inside, the rooms were highly interconnected. A typical chamber featured three internal doorways, allowing passage to the room on the right, the room on the left, and the room directly above it [רש״י, מלבי״ם].

Moving upward through the levels did not involve standard wooden or stone stairs [רד״ק]. The primary approach among commentators is that the ascent was made via a spiral staircase. This structure was built as a hollow stone pillar with stairs wrapping around it, allowing a person to climb to a significant height within a narrow space, avoiding the need for a long, sloped ladder Alternatively, some suggest the ascent was made through a vertical shaft or an opening in the ceiling that connected the floors [רד״ק].

Using this method of ascent, one would continue climbing from the middle floor up to the third and highest level These numerous chambers and galleries wrapped around the Temple from three different directions, creating a vast and continuous multi-level structure [רד״ק].

Beyond its architectural function, this winding path upward offers a deeper spiritual insight. The gradual nature of the spiral ascent teaches that a person should not rush or attempt to skip levels in their spiritual journey toward God. Rather, one must progress with patience and moderation, climbing step by step along an ordered and structured path [אהבת יהונתן].
