I Kings 6:14Sefaria

וַיִּ֧בֶן שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה אֶת־הַבַּ֖יִת וַיְכַלֵּֽהוּ׃

The completion of the Temple marks a pivotal moment, serving both as a transition from the exterior shell to the intricate interior design and as a testament to the builder's spiritual resilience. The primary approach among commentators is that this milestone does not represent the end of all construction, but rather the conclusion of a specific stage. Following the erection of the exterior stone walls, the final structural touches were applied [ביאור שטיינזלץ], particularly the completion of the building's ceiling [מצודת דוד]. From this point forward, the focus shifted inward. The bare stone walls and floors were covered with cedar planks, and the inner sanctums, including the main hall and the Holy of Holies, were constructed [מלבי״ם, רלב״ג, רד״ק].

Beyond the physical stages of building, there is a deeper narrative context. A challenge arises when considering how the work could be considered finished while many construction tasks immediately follow. The explanation is found in the events that just occurred. God had just delivered a prophecy to Solomon, warning him that the survival of the Temple depended entirely on the Israelites keeping the Commandments. Such a stark warning could have easily broken Solomon's resolve. He might have abandoned the massive investment, fearing that strangers would one day conquer and destroy the building.

Instead, Solomon demonstrated immense greatness of spirit. Despite the conditional nature of God's promise, his dedication did not waver. He pressed on and completed the work fully, acting in the manner of truly great-hearted individuals who pour themselves into monumental endeavors as if they will stand for all eternity [אברבנאל].
