I Kings 6:32Sefaria

The entrance to the Holy of Holies served as much more than a simple physical barrier. It was a masterpiece of design, blending precise wood carving with unique gold plating to elevate the sense of awe and majesty in the Temple's most sacred space. The creation of the two doors of olive wood was not the addition of a new set of doors, but an elaboration on the artistry applied to the inner sanctuary. Solomon adorned these doors with the exact same shapes that he carved into the surrounding walls [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

Based on the tradition of the Sages, the design of this entrance was highly complex and actually consisted of four distinct doors. The outer doors opened into the doorway space to cover the thickness of the wall, while the inner doors opened inward into the room itself. This specific arrangement was designed to hide the back of the doors, which was the only surface in the entire Temple left without gold plating [מלבי״ם, רד״ק, אברבנאל]. Furthermore, because the poles of the Ark of the Covenant protruded outward from the Holy of Holies, these doors could never be completely closed. To solve this, a curtain was also hung across the entrance to act as the actual visual screen [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

The wooden doors were deeply carved with images of cherubim, palm trees, and flowers before receiving their golden overlay. The primary approach among commentators is that the gold was beaten and flattened into exceptionally thin sheets for a very specific reason. Naturally, one might assume that adding a layer of metal over detailed woodwork would blur or completely hide the delicate carvings underneath. To prevent this, the gold was hammered and pressed into the wood so perfectly that it sank directly into every carved groove and wrapped tightly around every raised edge. Instead of erasing the artwork, the gold plating preserved it entirely, allowing the original designs to remain just as clear and visible as they were in the bare wood.
