Saul dispatches messengers with a specific goal: to bring David to stand before him, just as he had done in the past [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This marks a clear escalation. Unlike the men sent earlier, whose orders were merely to keep watch over David without arresting him, these new messengers are commanded to actively take him into custody.

Beneath this order lies a calculated legal trap. Saul anticipates that when the messengers attempt to seize David, he will physically resist. By fighting back against the king's envoys, David would legally condemn himself to the death penalty [מלבי״ם].

However, when the messengers arrive to carry out their orders, they are met by Michal. She answers them directly, claiming that David is lying in bed due to illness [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
