A journey intended for a specific destination takes an unexpected spiritual turn, transforming into an overwhelming prophetic experience. Rather than merely traveling to the general region of Ramah, Saul made a deliberate decision to head directly to Nayot, the specific place where Samuel lived [מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators is that the Spirit of God rested upon Saul while he was still on the road, well before he reached his destination. He experienced this prophetic overflow from afar because of his unique spiritual background. Unlike his messengers, who only began to prophesy once they arrived and stood directly before Samuel, Saul was already prepared and worthy of prophecy in his own right, having experienced it in the past.

Because of this prior readiness, the moment Saul directed his path toward Samuel's location, the spirit of prophecy was immediately drawn to him. He walked in a continuous state of prophecy, experiencing the divine presence the entire way until he finally arrived at Nayot [מלבי״ם].
