The confrontation between a father and his daughter erupts the moment Saul discovers the empty bed holding only a lifeless statue. Facing Michal, Saul demands to know why she aided his enemy's escape. His anger, however, is not simply about the escape itself, but rather the careful trickery she used [מלבי״ם]. If she had merely let David slip out a window, she could have claimed he fled on his own. Instead, she placed statues in the bed and lied about him being sick. This deception was a deliberate stalling tactic to buy time. Without this trick, Saul’s men would have chased David immediately and caught him on the road. The delay gave David the head start he needed to vanish completely, moving far beyond the reach of his pursuers [אלשיך, מצודת דוד].

Cornered by her father's fury, Michal deflects the blame and claims she acted under a real threat to her life. She describes David acting like a ruthless bandit who drew a sword on her, forcing her to help him flee [רש״י]. She insists that David was the one who commanded her to set up the fake scene with the statues, and she only cooperated out of a desperate fear of death [מלבי״ם, חומת אנך]. She explains her lie to the royal messengers about David's illness as an attempt to hide his departure, hoping that a little extra time would allow her father's rage to cool down [מצודת דוד].

Beneath her defensive story, Michal weaves a subtle, diplomatic message. When recounting David’s threat, she tells her father that David asked why he should have to kill her, rather than simply threatening to strike her down. This careful phrasing is meant to signal to Saul that she was actually willing to die rather than disobey her father's orders, but David chose to spare her because she was dear to him.
