וְדָוִ֨ד בָּרַ֜ח וַיִּמָּלֵ֗ט וַיָּבֹ֤א אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵל֙ הָרָמָ֔תָה וַיַּ֨גֶּד־ל֔וֹ אֵ֛ת כׇּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָֽשָׂה־ל֖וֹ שָׁא֑וּל וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ הוּא֙ וּשְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ (בנוית) [בְּנָיֽוֹת]׃

After facing immediate mortal danger, David seeks both physical and spiritual refuge. He turns to the prophet who anointed both him and his pursuer, hoping for advice, comfort, and prophetic guidance to save his life. He does this out of a deep belief that his destiny is overseen by God [אברבנאל]. Reaching the prophet marks a transition to complete safety. In earlier moments, David merely ran from the immediate threat of Saul and his guards, but arriving here represents a full escape to a secure haven [מלבי״ם].

Upon arriving, David recounts everything Saul has done to him. Samuel listens, and his silence serves as an unspoken promise and confirmation. Because God commanded David's anointing as king, Saul's schemes are destined to fail. Even while running for his life, David reveals his profound spiritual character. Instead of focusing solely on survival, he immerses himself in intense study with Samuel. In a single night, he manages to learn what a brilliant student could not absorb in a hundred years [חומת אנך].

As they journey together, David is treated with precedence to honor his royal status [אברבנאל]. They settle in a place called Naioth, a name meaning a dwelling or home. The primary approach among commentators is that this was a quiet, designated area within or just bordering the city of Ramah [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It functioned as a house of study and a secluded retreat where groups of prophetic disciples lived, learning from Samuel and seeking the word of God [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, אברבנאל].

Beyond its geographic location, an additional tradition connects the name of this place directly to the subjects David and Samuel studied. According to this view, they engaged in uncovering the beauty of the world. Through the spirit of prophecy, they researched and discovered the exact future location where the Temple would be built [רד״ק, מנחת שי, אברבנאל].
